Following the success of UTV Motion Pictures, UTV launched its second movie brand, SpotBoy, on May 2007, as a step towards taking the vision of the company to the next big level.
In the few months following its launch SpotBoy has roped in filmmakers like Shyam Benegal and Anurag Kashyap for productions. It has also signed Majid Majidi, the internationally acclaimed, award-winning Iranian filmmaker, for a forthcoming production. Further, SpotBoy has entered into a joint venture with Richard Branson's Virgin Comics with SpotBoy supervising the creative development.
The main objective of a second film production brand will largely develop its own fresh content. This will provides the company with bandwidth and thinking flexibility. It also helps bring diverse projects within the same studio through different brands.
